“A woman who was in the middle of a payment dispute with the DWP has burnt herself to death. The inquest did not conclude exactly why she took her own life when she did, but the coroner said that her dispute with the DWP was causing her distress. I believe it is time for root and branch change to the welfare state to prevent the claiming of benefits and poverty from damaging people’s mental health. God damnit, what a tragic scenario. My heart goes out to her Our welfare system is totally not fit for purpose. Even in the best cases.
My sister had been looking to move up to our little town from the coast to be near family. She can’t afford to buy a place and will have to give up her job where she lives to find a new one here. In the meantime she would have to be on universal credit.
She was offered a place by the local housing assoc (miracle) but then they cancelled the offer. They told her that after calculating what she would get on universal credit, she couldn’t afford to pay the rent and eat. In social housing, mind you. Exactly what universal credit was designed for.
It. Just. Doesn’t. Work.
Tory cruelty and inhumanity to the most vulnerable in our society shames us all.
That’s astonishing. I worked for two or three housing associations. The third took over the second, and this engulfment of the small to medium HAs became a cardinal feature of the sector a few years back. the big players left behind have become rather powerful, mainly through behaving more and more like unregulated landlords. Clearly that trend shows no signs of stopping.
It’s serendipitous…our medical model is no longer fit for purpose, it’s so deeply corrupt, invasive and exploitative…the law may be an ass but is beholden on those practising to ensure that the animal is healthy and happy…the same is true of medicine…if not one makes an ass out of everyone…!
