What's It Like When The Lights Go Out?

Gonzola Lira with an interesting insight into the psychological effects of loss of electricity. For instance:

“It sucks the life out of people”

“Every modern building will have to have the fire sprinklers drained, because they are pressurised and without heating, in the mid-winter they will burst.”

“This will create an even bigger migrant problem for the west”

Decent inverter, couple of good, large batteries from the scrap yard and a couple of solar battery chargers.

Won’t run your house, but it’ll make things easier to deal with. E.G keeping the freezer going long enough for you to eat the contents instead of what you (possibly) can at the time.

Two youths in my house start sharpening flints within 30 minutes of internet loss (both autistic). It’ll help somewhat with that too (although the internet is unlikely to be on).

Stay safe all

I know of a data centre that has as their first line of defence a cabinet with 90 car batteries to keep things going for long enough before the on-site generator kicks in. This was once the ‘pipe’ through which ClaraNet (long since defunct) distributed web services right scross the UK. Even now it serves as a mirror for quite a few online services such as GitHub.

Alas all I have, at the moment, are some power banks, a spirit burner, plenty of candles. If it came to eat or be eaten I’d be cowering from the carnivores pretty damn quick

BY the way that Gonzo video was about the first one I’ve seen where he doesn’t spark up a ciggie in the first minute. Times must be tough in Kharkov.
