Voting Regulations #PhotoID

Are people aware that now, quote; “you will not be able to vote unless you show photographic identification to the polling station staff”? I’ve never been asked for such identification before. Do the PtBs realise that many who do not posses such a “dog-tag” I.D will simply not vote? There is no widely used I.D system beyond that of driving licences and passports. More marginalisation by the elitists who of-course posses driving licenses and passports as a matter of course, carrying a photo-I.D has never been compulsory in this country but, effectively, it is now!

If you don’t have an accepted form of photo ID

You can apply for a free voter ID document, known as a Voter Authority Certificate, if:

  • you don’t have an accepted form of photo ID
  • you’re not sure whether your photo ID still looks like you
  • you’re worried about using an existing form of ID for any other reason, such as the use of a gender marker

You need to register to vote before applying for a Voter Authority Certificate.

Out of date photo ID

You can still use your photo ID if it’s out of date, as long as it looks like you.

The name on your ID should be the same name you used to register to vote.

Showing ID as an anonymous elector

If you’re registered to vote anonymously and want to vote in person, you’ll need to apply for an Anonymous Elector’s Document.

This text is printed on the documents sent out to us by the local Electoral officer, so I had seen this before recently. I wasn’t previously aware of it. I do possess a passport and driver’s license but tend not to carry these about.

I have mixed feelings: this could reduce electoral fraud… but my suspicion is that a lot of this takes place after the ballot boxes close, or prior to them even opening (via postal votes). But your point about swathes of society being thereby excluded is indisputable G.

This measure will be sold as a way of making elections less open to dispute and will strengthen the ‘election-deniers’ trope used by evil people to denigrate their opponents and to consolidate their stolen power.
