Quite an interesting article by Frank Furedi on the rather partial definition of ‘democracy’ being used to try and undermine support for Rassemblement National (RN). It looked likely for a while that the AfD in Germany might be subject to similar attack, but that has calmed down a little. A pause rather than a withdrawal I imagine.
The parallels with the “our democracy” narrative in the USA are fairly clear.
While Reform keep galloping up the polls here in the UK it looks unlikely that this will translate into parliamentary representation.
A hard-right boogieman to focus on, as another justification for the technocratic surveillance apparatus, is probably as much a part of the plan in Europe as it is in US.
