If the powers that be have recognised that petrol driven vehicles will be increasingly rare, which they seem to have, and which is undoubtedly going to be the case, all new road schemes ought to be halted. By all means maintain and repair existing infrastructure, but that’s all that’s needed.

Why won’t this happen? Pretty simple: building roads, flimsy new houses, crappy university residences, and Amazon warehouses, is very profitable to the small cartel that always seem to win the rigged tendering processes. And they bribe the planners and politicians very reliably.
