Petition: Ban Snares U.K

"Dear Steve Reed MP, Daniel Zeichner MP and Baroness Sue Hayman

I am writing to urge you to take swift action in banning the use of snares in England—a move that has already been made in both Wales and Scotland. The Labour Party made a clear commitment in its manifesto to ban these cruel and indiscriminate devices, and I am asking when time will be set aside to fulfil this promise.

Snares cause immense and unnecessary suffering to wildlife. These archaic traps do not discriminate between species, often capturing non-target animals—including protected wildlife and even pets. Despite so-called “humane” snaring guidelines, the reality is that any animal caught in a snare faces prolonged distress, serious injury, and, in many cases, a slow, agonising death.

Wales and Scotland have already recognised that snares have no place in modern wildlife management and have legislated to ban their use. England now stands as an outlier in the UK, despite widespread public opposition to snares and a clear Labour manifesto commitment to prohibit them. Given this, I ask: when will your government introduce legislation to ban snares in England?

The time for action is now. I urge you to prioritise this long-overdue reform and provide a clear timeline for when England will finally follow through on the Labour Party’s promise to end the use of snares.

I look forward to your response.": Ban snares petition - Protect the Wild
