Life began - on this planet - some billions of years ago, so we reckon currently, and has been a seamless continuum ever since. ‘Individual’ life - a very Enlightenment concept - doesn’t really ‘begin’ anywhere after that first long-ago conception: chicken/egg?
And - yer know - was there literally no life at all anywhere in all the - allegedly - fifteen-billion-year-old ‘universe’ until it suddenly ignited spontaneously on Earth? Panspermia is tosh?
My intuition, fwiw, is that ‘individual’ life - if that concept means anything at all in a wholly mutually-interdependent ecosphere - comes with the - built-in - understanding that it can terminate at any time for the animating soul running it; any time after the moment of fusion of the gametes. That’s the deal: When the latest time comes for your immortal soul to finish its latest interlude in the bardo state, and plunge into the incarnation merrygoround - ‘The Wheel of Rebirth’ - yet again, a settled part of the deal is that this particular life can end at any time, both before as well as after parturition, and - as with the old druidic culture of the ancient Celts - we shouldn’t fuss too much about when exactly the stop comes, since each soul will be coming back for another go pretty soon, whatever happens.
Plenty of old souls might well think: “Oh no! Not another handicapped-body life to run! Been there, done that, squeezed all the benefit I can from it, in service of Big Mind’s great purpose, so I’m off from this incarnation, before it even gets born! And besides, whether or not I’m destined to run another handicapped life, my current mother doesn’t want this pregnancy. Her free-will choice; I defer.”
And that is each soul’s prerogative, since free will is a non-negotiable, literally-inherent part of the whole incarnation deal; free will for the newly-pregnant female too, as well as for the newly-conceived morula…
Once we get clear of the crabby-old-male-human diktat that ‘God hates abortion!!!’ and face the ecological and spiritual realities of our existence, none of the above is a big deal. Always, always painful for a woman - or other female animal - to have to abort a pregnancy, it seems. But really - no big deal for the endlessly-evolving merrygoround…
PS: Strayed away from Nova Scotia a bit, haven’t we…?
