Intersectionality often gets a bad rap with certain elements of the left-leaning crowd, getting bundled up into arguments about id-pol and hair-splitting. However, in its most basic form it encourages us all to look at how ideas and systems intersect a wide range of different groups causing overlapping problems.
Here is an example of how extinction rebellion is failing in its mission to engage with a wide range of the very people it needs to engage with in order to build a truly popular, revolutionary movement. In particular the discussion focuses on class and race issues, and underscores how, despite efforts to change, XR remains a pretty overwhelmingly white, middle-class effort, with little engagement from other communities.
It’s a long read, but there is a lot to be said and a lot to think about here. The issues could not be more urgent, and the lessons - how to build a true populist movement for sanity and change - need to be urgently learned.
Peace,
