Well… Film 4 has had a hand in some great productions eg Dead Man’s Shoes, In Bruges, Kill List, even Paris, Texas believe it or not. And even stodgy old BBC has fluked a few good’uns in between all those vile costume dramas and stiff upper lip bollocks e.g. Red Road, Damned United, Blue Story. But so have plenty of non state-funded production companies. If I want to watch their stuff I’ll pay to view, just like I have with all the above-named. A second hand DVD on eBay can usually be got for £3-5 which is way less than the Propaganda Tax, even at a rate of two a month.
It says it all that the plaintive Don’t Do It shrieking, above, uses Four Weddings And A Funeral as the exemplar. Nauseating swill. C4 did use to have some good stuff but baking shows? Whatever.
