It’s a good piece, thanks for sharing. I’m not sure this paradigm really works anymore though.

A more accurate analogy is that of core-periphery, with multiple redundancy. When one proxy collapses the hegemonic powers can rest a while (“ceasefire”) while they switch focus to the next. Winning isn’t necessarily the objective, just attrition of other people’s stuff. c.f. pissing in the other guy’s soup on the assumption that they would do the same to you.
