Continuing the discussion from Murder of 300 year old oak at Hunningham, Warks., plus 1000s of other trees for HS2 abomination:
@RhisiartGwilym forwarded this message from Kerry (one of the activists who is working to stop the mass tree felling for the HS2 project) to me this morning with a request to publish here. And a further request to republish wherever we can - so please republish via twitter or facebook or any other social media that you good folk have access to. – admin
I’m writing with a deep plea from the heart as I know how much you cherish nature, trees and woodland.
AS you see from my picture below this old beauty down the road from me went on Thursday to make way for another temporary service road that could easily have gone to the left or right of it. It’s an unfolding nightmare. 1000s of our old and ancient trees are being ripped out without a care. Every day oaks are being cut down for hardly a reason eg 75 - 200 year old oaks on the side of the Fosse here…to make way for a temporary service roundabout for HS2 equipment.
I feel ashamed that it has taken me so long to sit up and take notice and do something other than sign petitions and go on marches but I never imagined the horror…I really thought there would be more care taken.
The destruction of our old woodland, trees, hedges and wildlife habitat is unprecedented in our country…we usually look to the Amazon or Indonesia for such appalling ecocide.
And it’s only just begun…as I write, heavy machinery is being taken into woodlands and nature reserves all over the country. Mighty trees were destroyed in Euston Square yesterday I believe.
I try to do my bit by taking coffee to the people who sit with the trees trying to stop the fences being erected. The fences that sign their death sentence. I try to reach out to local people…this is their air quality and their greenspace that is being taken away. Sometimes I think my dogs pay more heed, and the dogs on the street know it’s all for profit not people.
On Friday morning , as I sat with the body of the Hunningham Oak…one of many but a fine specimen that was Tree of the Year on 2018, I witnessed a small copse being literally put through a chipper, with birds flying out of it and no doubt any insects, bee nests etc and small mammals including bats being ground to pulp. I don’t have the photographic equipment to film this. We need more support from wildlife photographers to document this illegal ecocide.
We need to go higher…create a media storm of protest and we need MPs and members of the House of Lords and landowners to take note and plead with the PM to stop this madness.
The pic of me by the oak was retweeted by Robert McFarlane and went viral…this is what we need. I’m reaching out because I’m desperate and I know you care.
If you can spread the word to even one influential person who may take up the cause and we save one of these habitats …we will have done our bit.
Thank you so much
Lots of love
Kerry. xxxxx
