Google needs it's own nuclear facilities to power AI

Jesus stopped weeping and joined Greenpeace…

This is why we need to put everyone in smart cities, transfer power to the WHO and the UN, and eat ze bugs.

Meta turns to nuclear power for AI training — asking for developer proposals for small modular reactors or larger nuclear solutions

What I’m wondering is why don’t they just ask ChatGPT how to reduce their power needs and who is the best supplier of electricity generating plants.

Might be worth keeping an eye on planning applications in the North East.

A couple of miles up the road from here, at Lynemouth, there used to be a massive factory run by Alcan, makers of aluminium foil. (Subsidiary of Rio Tinto.) The power consumption was so high that a purpose-built power station was erected. Alcan scarpered in 2012 but the power station is still there, burning wood pellets “sustainably”.

Another mile or so in the other direction is Cambois (pronounced like the author of L’Etranger) putative site of a huge factory for batteries for electric cars… until that fell through. So the current plan (ouch at pun) is to build a massive data “campus” on the site.

I think we can guess the rest. Note that name of the company driving this: Blackstone. Apparently the world’s leading alternative investment firm. Alternative to BlackRock at any rate.
