Is there a way to make a thread no longer salient, to unfollow as it were? Im afraid I find it very difficult to ignore them ‘manually’

At the bottom of a post (if only one) or a thread (if lots of replies) there are several icons (a spanner, a link icon with the word Share next to it, Bookmark, Flag and Reply) and then under that there is a box with a Bell icon and down arrow. Depending on how you have interacted with a post this may be labelled Normal, Tracking etc. If you click that drop down arrow there is a Muted option. If you click that Muted option that should stop you seeing anything more about a thread even if there continue to be replies to it etc.
