I believe there are lots of micro-structures in the air-plankton that, from their molecular configurations, can qualify to fit the virological concept of ‘virus’. What exactly they are (deadly terrorists out to kill us, or useful message-and-sample carriers sent by pathfinder individuals advising us how they’ve managed to deal with and adapt to novel challenges in the environment) remains open to hypothesising, it seems.
There also exist these competing hypothetic narratives about whether anyone really can offer a complete description of particular examples of these molecular structures, together with samples thereof in purified form, or not. And at the moment there don’t seem to be any finally-conclusive items of trust-your-life evidence for we stay-at-home keyboard jockeys to be able to produce. The ‘yes-they-have/no-they-haven’t’ arguments continue, but in truth it’s all just competitive verbiage. What’s a girl to believe?
In the meantime, though, there is this long, long history of pathogenic episodes where a whole rush of illnesses and deaths happen together - aka an epidemic - and, as history insists, these come, inflict their slightly-higher-than-average death rates for a short period, whilst individuals who’ve become fragile in bodily health, either by bad life-choices or simply by the inevitability of ageing, are culled out. The episodes then attenuate into ever less potent mutations of the original pathogen (whatever it really is), until the whole thing blows over, and fades into the nuisancical, but really rather minor, endemic background; with the survivors’ on-board libraries of immune-system responsive strategies suitably extended by the incident.
These survivors almost invariably being the great majority, of course. Even the legendary Black Death is usually supposed to have killed never more than half the humans available at the time, anywhere on Earth. Mostly, even authentic pandemics are much less slaughterous than that. And I defy anyone to prove - just yet - that the covid thing is really all that excess-death slaughterous. Show me some squeaky clean, absolutely trustworthy evidence, when you can, and I’ll begin to believe. At the moment, the basic, common-sense precautionary principle says: ‘Trust NOTHING!’
We’ve been doing this natural respond-and-evolve stuff very effectively since time out of mind. But now the outtacontrol technocrats-on-the-make want to insist that this ancient evolutionary strategy has suddenly changed to a much more deadly, entirely new pattern, and only fascistically-ordered, constant medical intervention is going to “keep us all safe!”
Meanwhile, the average shlub goes on - de-facto - relying on the ancient process, stays healthy, and - if you’re of my mind - doesn’t worry noticeably, and waits to see what will eventually come clear with the wash of hindsight…
